Day 5: Hershey Park on Father’s Day

June 18, 2012 3:13 am Published by Leave your thoughts

Today we woke up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and drove forty minutes to Hershey for an event at Hershey Park in conjunction with our flagship sponsor, Waste Management. Since it was Father’s Day, the line for the main entrance grew quickly in the early morning and by 10:30 or so the park was already packed. We couldn’t bring the bus completely inside the park so we set up a table by the main entrance and took turns directing guests to the parking lot where the bus was parked. At first, many excited kids ran by our table desperate to get onto their favorite rollercoaster, dragging their family along with them. However, we quickly learned how to lure people in with our mini Clif bars and sustainability love and by the end of the day, we’d met a whole smattering of Hershey park families who were enthused by the Bus.

It was really exciting to see that even after a day jam-packed with exciting rides and exhausting crowds, people could still get excited by a bus powered by waste vegetable oil. We got out our solar oven to cook some nachos and one boy we met was floored to find out that you can cook just using the power of the sun! He was sad to find out that we wouldn’t be coming back tomorrow, but it felt great to plant a seed of excitement and knowledge into his head. Going to sleep tonight juiced to do it again soon.

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads! Next stop, Washington DC!
